I just don't understand this profession, how is a profession with such technical background, skill, with the education required, and the PE licensure, can be paid so little?īasically, I have ruled out my last bit of intention of going into design/engineering. What gives? That 70K-80K jobs are everywhere, and even 15 - 20 years in, unless you start your own firm, i still don't see how much more a Civil Engineer will get paid. And also I have heard they are getting really stressed too with all the deadlines, billable hours policy, politics among Sr engineers vs more junior engineers etc etc.Īnyway, I am just shocked, how is this profession SO underpaid with so little other perks? What are the people in here for? Sitting at a desk doing a job that get paid so little, and just for the glorified title of being an "engineer"? The $50K starting salary is almost laughable, my friend who is still in college, have very little experience, got a recruiting job at a HR dept, for $25 hr + commission, and I was making 80K pretty much my 3rd year in GCs, and so many of my friends in other profession make well over that. I sat down with a couple CE firms we work with and see if they have any opening, one company basically said I have to start like a newly grad and they can only offer me $50K, and I have talked to a few engineers that has 7+ experience, and their salary is still around that $80K range, and told me the increase has always been very slow. I don't have any design experience with drafting and all, but because a lot of our projects are design/build so I understand the process.

Now that I am searching for a new adventure, at first I thought about the design/engineering, trying to see if I should do something that I was "supposed" to do after college, but I just can't happen to notice how underpaid this profession is. My paid salary before I decided to leave was $120k + 15% profit sharing, and I was due for another 15% raise in a couple months, and I left the company for various reasons. I am 31 y.o with a CE degree, and I am in the middle of job search after working for a large GC in the past 7 years since graduating.
